The corner of Estados Unidos St. and Balcarce St. in San Telmo gather two wonderful places which sum up the café spirit of Buenos Aires City. Bar Sur (299 Estados Unidos St.) and Café Rivas (302 Estados Unidos St.) are wonderful examples of a classic Porteño bar and a (new?) vintage-styled proposal. Hostel Colonial tells you about these two bars just 15 blocks away from our hostel, in the heart of San Telmo.
Bar Sur is among Buenos Aires notable bars and a
pioneer in night shows as: theater exhibitions, poetry declamation and tango
dancing, among other. It was defined by poet Marco Denevi as: “a great night
temple where we can carry out our most beloved rituals, those which define us
as Porteños”. The corner was built in 1910 in classical French architecture and
still keeps the mystic of a traditional spot.
Café Rivas, on the other hand was opened in 2010 with
the idea to set a classical place with the magic of the beginning of XX
Century. Inside Rivas, you might as well be in Paris or London or in the Buenos
Aires of the 1930s. The vintage aesthetics, the impeccable decoration and the
music shows until midnight propose a true travel through time. The coffee is
very recommendable and the food is as varied as good.
One street, two bars, and a trip through the magic of
San Telmo. Choose your favorite!
