THE BEST POLO IN THE WORLD (By Hostel Buenos Aires)
When it comes to sports, Argentina is much more than just football/soccer. One of the outstanding disciplines in Argentina is polo. Though not as popular as football, polo is the sport where we are almost invincibles. We have won the world championship and the Olympic gold many times. Nowadays, we still have the best polo in the world: the Argentine Polo Championship is like an NBA of the specialty.
This traditional sport has two teams composed of four players riding on a horse. The field is 275 meters long and 180 meters wide as maximum, in each end there is a goal made of two socks of wood (or another light material) with a 7.3 meters distance between them. Each rider has a wooden mallet in order to hit the ball to score the goal. After each goal, teams change the goal.
A privileged place to enjoy this sport is in our city: the Campo de Polo de Palermo (Palermo’s Polo Field). On the corner of Del Libertador Avenue and Dorrego Avenue, is the home of the Argentine Open, the most important tournament in the world, played each December. Pure blood horses, the best players and the most famous teams in the world such as: La Dolfina, La Ellerstina e Indios Chapaleufú.
You can take a guided visit to the Polo Field to know more about the history of this sport, walk the field, see the horses and, if you’re lucky, maybe enjoy a polo match. The Mecca of Polo is an unforgettable walk for sport lovers, animal lovers, landscape lovers and specially for those who love polo.
