AVENIDA DE MAYO: OUR GREATEST AVENUE (By Hostel Buenos Aires)
Few streets are as representatives of Buenos Aires as the Avenida de Mayo (May Avenue). Connecting the oldest part of the city and the main urban tourist sightsees, this avenue posseses a large and rich history that began in 1894 when it became the first avenue in South America. 10 blocks starting in Bolivar Street, in front of the Plaza de Mayo, enfing in the Congress Square.
Its design was inspired by French boulevards, altought Spanish presence marked its final look and history. Quickly filled with Spanish operetta theaters, Madrid-styled cafes, literary associations and circles formed by the Spanish immigrants, even its architecture ended up looking Iberian. Avenida de Mayo has been and still is the privileged scenario of the Porteño public life: historical marches, celebrations and official mournings took place here.
Famous not only on the surface: underneath, it houses the first underground train in South America (built in 1912, the A Line); and up above, where you can see some of the most beautiful and relevant buildings of our country. Besides connecting the headquarters of the executive (Casa Rosada) and the Parliament (Argentine Congress), has renowed places as: the Porteño Parliament, the Café Tortoni, the Astoria and Castelar Hotels, the Avenida Theater, the Barolo Passage and the building known as La Inmobiliaria, among others.
Required path for the elected presidents (from the Congreso to the Casa Rosada), of great funerals as those of Juan Domingo and Eva Perón, and celebrations as the Centenary (1910) and Bicentenary of our Nation(2010). The Avenida de Mayo became also the main scenario for great marches, military parades, historical shootings and hundreds of carnival. A place you can’t miss in Buenos Aires, just 6 block away from Hostel Colonial.
