LUNCH WITH PERÓN

The magic of memories and nostalgia is surprising. You might ask yourself: Lunch with Perón? Why not! The ultimate trend in Porteño bars and restaurant is to remember in different ways the Argentine political leader of the 40s and 50s. If the 90s had the return of the image of its wife Eva Perón (interpreted by Madonna in a movie and starring an Andrew Lloyd Weber Broadway musical), the 10s of this century in Argentina are meant to be the years of the Perón revival.

Political commitment? Commercial strategy? Kitsch tribute? There’s a bit of each one of those things in this revival nourished by iconography, memorabilia and a lot of creativity. The thematic peronist bars are already an expanding trend in Buenos Aires. Original proposals based in interesting menus and fine designed spaces. Hostel Colonial tells you which are and where to find these great places.

“Perón Perón” (a name remembering a traditional popular hymn) is one of them. Located in Palermo (2225 Carranza St.) its decorated with pictured of Perón and the great 50s demonstration. “Un café con Perón” (A coffee with Perón), in Recoleta (2602, Austria St) owns a curious statue of the leader, seated and smiling, holding a cup of coffee, and willing to interact with the visitors or to be immortalized in their pictures.

“El General” (The General), in Montserrat (350 Belgrano Avenue) was the first to tribute Perón. Opened in 2005 and today works as a cooperative served by its waiters and other workers who wanted to honor the memory of he who was defined as “the first worker”. As a bonus track, in La Plata City (50km away from Buenos Aires City), there exists another peronist bar-restaurant called “Juan Domingo” (the names of Perón).
