A TRIBUTE TO PORTEÑO STREETS
This is a project for Porteños and tourists. In the next months, 33 streets of historic Downtown Buenos Aires will have informative signs with the story of its name or the life of the character they tribute. The main goal is to renew those old bronze sheets which still can be found in some corners (too high to be read and too little information). The new one will be available in three languages.
The first area to cover is the oldest side of town, among the streets: Avenida de Mayo, Paseo Colón, Juan de Garay and Bernardo de Irigoyen. There will be 120 signs which will repeat in the same street every 20 blocks. They will be available in Spanish, English and Portuguese, to make our history accessible to a larger number of visitors.
Most of the streets in the area tribute relevant characters of our history (generally military men, jurists and politicians), and some other refer to battles or Latin American countries. These streets, the oldest of Argentina, include –as expected- the oldest named street (one of the few who preserved its original name): it’s Balcarce, where the Casa Rosada is located, which tributes a hero of the Andes Army.
If the project succeeds, the idea is to expand it to the 2000 streets of Buenos Aires City. To take a walk in Buenos Aires will be even more fun now. Meanwhile, as a teaser, we tell you that Hostel Colonial is locate on Tucumán Street (a province on the northwest of Argentina), in the corner with San Martín Street (the Liberator of Argentina and other countries in South America).
