BUENOS AIRES ARCHITECTURAL PATRIMONY PRESERVED

The Buenos Aires City Government has added 39 squares to the area of architectural preservation. The patrimony of Buenos Aires Downtown and the banks area is now protected by law. Almost 200 historical buildings are preserved by this initiative. The area grew rapidly in the three first decades of the past century as Buenos Aires consolidated as a South American metropolis.

The area is among Florida Street, Alem Avenue and Plaza de Mayo and San Martín Square, the same zone where our Hostel Colonial is located. Many of these buildings belonged to trading companies and large enterprises who built their local headquarters as true palaces. The official named of this Historical Protection Area is “Catedral al Norte” (North of Cathedral), the old name of the neighborhood.

Some of the most beautiful constructions are: the Cereal Stock Market Building (in the corner of Alem and Corrientes Avenues), the Pacífico Galleries, Harrods and the Naval Center (all in Córdoba Avenue and Florida Street), the old Bank of Boston in Florida and Diagonal Norte, among others. Besides the architectural protection, a limit on the height of future constructions has been established.

It’s a zone that defines a large part of our economical history, near to our Hostel, that you can appreciate if you’re visiting Buenos Aires City.
