THE MAGIC OF LAVALLE SQUARE (By Hostel Buenos Aires)
The Plaza Lavalle (Lavalle Square) is one of the most beautiful squares in our city. A three blocks green space in the San Nicolás neighborhood, surrounded by Libertad, Lavalle and Talcahuano Streets and the Córdoba Avenue. The place was the scene for relevant political events and its surrounded by some of the most significant buildings of Buenos Aires. Hostel Colonial invites you to know this magic square.
The square is located in the place formerly known as Hueco de Zamudio, a plot of land occupied by a lagoon until XVIII Century. This lagoon was fed by a stream of water which run by current Libertad Street crossed by the Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs). Later, the lot was filled and over it the Artillery Park was built. In this park took place the revolution that gave birth to one of the first political parties in Argentina (the Radical Civic Union).
The name of the square honors Juan Lavalle, a controversial politician and military man who, curiously, executed his political enemy Manuel Dorrego, whose mansion located in the north block of the square, between Viamonte and Córdoba Streets. The central block has on one side the Colón Theater, one of the most importante lyrical theaters in the world, and on the other the imposing building of the Palace of Justice.
In the south east end of the square finishes the Diagonal Norte (North Diaginal) which symbolically connects the judicial power with the executive power (in the Casa Rosada in Plaza de Mayo). One block away is also locates the Obelisco, another great Porteño symbol. The square has many statues and monuments dedicated to General Lavalle, the National Ballet and the music, among others. It’s surrounded by libraries specialized in legal texts and some traditional bars as the “Petit Colón”. Just 6 block away from our Hostel Colonial, a place you must visit.
