HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES - RAILWAY TRIPS AROUND ARGENTINA

For a country whose development and expansion deep into the south was in part propelled by the railway, Argentina's rail system is in a sorry state today.
Nationalized under goverment of Juan D.Perón in 1948 following decades of mainly British ownership, Argentina's tracks slipped into disuse after the systems privatization in the 1990s, with many services reduced and the cut off altogether , leaving the door open for bus companies to flourish.
Today, long -distance travel by micro (coach) is the norm. but despite the limited functioning rail network, this underrated mode of transport remains relatively inexpensive in Argentina, depending on your preferences and budget. most companies offer seats in variations on the following classes:“turista, primera, pullman and camarote”, being the cheap seats for long-distance travel (and arguably for short-distances as well ), pullman or camarote are the way to go, still cheaper than bus or planes fare, the offer intimate travel in private sleeper compartments (camarotes); and the reclining seats in pullman are more spacious than those in turista and primera.

But where to go? A-24 hour long train ride to Tucumán, in northwest Argentina is one option, on a train that occasionally, unpredictably, takes even longer, and is thus strictly for those in no hurry.
For a short, more accessible hop to the seaside, to catch a breeze, for a dirty weekend or for the International Film Festival in November, Mar del Plata is the very place. A pullman ticket to the coastal town is a more than ideal option, whit a dining car and, lest the flat scenery should dissapoint , tv showing films throughout the trip.
Mardel's population swells past the million mark in the summer, when half of Buenos Aires descends on the coastal resort. Out of season , there's a chance to experience the life rhythm and attractions of this peaceful seaside city ,away from the midsummer madness trains leave from Constitución Station daily with Ferrobaires, and take approximately six hours. Prices range from AR $52 to AR $ 90 one way.
A bit further away and in the opposite direction, the up river city of Rosario is ideal for a three - to four day getaway by rail.
Waterfront strolls and shady parks and plazas, not to mention the famed beauty of Rosario women, make this a pleasant, undemanding break from Buenos Aires.
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Rosario boasts one of the most important collections of Argentinean art in the country, and don't miss a boat trip around the Delta's uninhabited islets, or a football match between the tow home team rivals Newell's Old Boys and Rosario Central.
The journey takes approximately seven hours, and costs between AR $ 20 and AR$ 55 one way. Ferrocentral and Trenes de Buenos Aires, trains both depart from the station in Retiro, TBA once daily and Ferrocentral four times a week the same Ferrocentral service ends in Córdoba, a large, friendly provincial city that's perfect for a week-long retreat.
Córdoba has some of the best examples of colonial architecture in Argentina, and a slower paced style than Buenos Aires. With an interesting mix of architectural styles set against a backdrop of mountains and lakes, the city will keep you busy for days with its museums, churches and historic buildings.
Don't miss the elaborated ceiling frescoes in the Cathedral , and consider a trip out to a smaller pueblo for a taste of country life. The 15 hour trip from Buenos Aires costs between AR $ 30 and AR $ 300(one way ) or from AR $ 22 to AR $ 69 for the eight hour trip from Rosario.
The government has announced its intention to re-establish long distance passenger trains between major cities including the continent's first high velocity bullet train.
Wich would connect Buenos Aires to Rosario in 85 minutes, and Rosario to Córdoba in 90. No one is holding their breath for the arrival of the bullet train, not for the much needed restoration of run down tracks nationally.
But for train enthusiasts, travellers short of cash and those looking for a little adventure, it's a relief to discover, in the meantime, that news of the death of Argentina's railways has been, as ever exaggerated.

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES - JELENE ARRIVED TO BUENOS AIRES FROM SERBIA AND FELL IN LOVE WITH OUR TANGO

I received an email from Serbia, which is so close to Bosnia where I´ve been in 2001, a reservation for a full month stay. After a couple of weeks, appeared a very gentle and tall young women, about 27 years old, it was obvious that we would become friends.
She adores "Porteñoland" and told me all the time “your city is beautiful”, she always runs to Tango lessons for that’s why she came here, her busy schedule makes her comes and go, before going to lessons she ask for coffee…. where is the coffee?!…., and yes like many of us, a coffee addicted, you could get a nice coffee whenever you wan at the Hostel Colonial Buenos Aires.
Many people come to Buenos Aires for the same reason, learning or improving Tango. I just noticed that Tango lessons in Buenos Aires are complete, not only will they prepare you for the dancing in itself, but you also get aware of life in times and history. So according to époques you get several types and tendencies of Tango.
Some renowned places to learn Tango in Buenos Aires has been mentioned by good remarks of our guests, staying at the Hostel Colonial.

Escuela Argentina de Tango
In Galerías Pacifico Shopping, 3* floor, on San Martin St. and Viamonte St. just--one block from the Hostel Colonial, where you also can learn how to sing, how to play the music and how to dance.
Open every day from Monday to Sunday.

La Viruta
1366 Armenia St. in Palermo
It offers also group lessons.
After the lesson, most people spontaneously stay and become real Porteño´s Milonga.
It also is a good way to make friends.

Mora Godoy Tango Studio
1090 Pueyrredón Ave., 2th floor.
For those who search an advanced level, Mora is a world famous Tango dancer.

For more information, ask the Hostel Colonial’s front desk and please feel free to ask for a coffee, we are here to help you.
You can find Tango Dance Festival & World Championship information every day in our blogs.

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES - A JUANITO´S NIGHTMARE JOURNAL - FREAK CONVERSATION AT THE FRONT DESK

Some late discussions about "Tequila" at the front desk the subject is being remarque by some Americans staying at the Hostel Colonial saying: that in Argentinean the tequila (I don´t like this, for me tequila = México) is sweeter than the one in Mexico, and is not so common here as it´s in the north. Maybe is popular beer around here thou we still sell speed vodka at the reception to cheer up parties and let the music with Tegan & Sara (Juanito´s selection)warm us up.
The Méxican-American girl Linda took a zip from the tequila bottle. I wonder how they do or how they will end up this night. I´m stonished, for me is just poison, says Juanito.
The time of nightlife in Argentina start as usual will be after 1.00 a.m. in Bahrein that it’s a disco at 2 blocks from the Hostel Colonial.
Well now Linda is going to take a nap, yes before a good nap to have all energy for the drum & bass and waist it euphorically, for Linda and Brandon is their last night at the hostel! And she said, that we are welcome to their new apartment in Palermo, other neighborhood of Buenos Aires they move into tomorrow!! Goodnight …till 1.00 am

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES - RECONQUISTA ST. - A NEW PEDESTRIAN STREET IN THE CITY (FRENCH TRANSLATION)

From the Hostel Colonial, getting down only one block on Tucuman Street, you can find the Pirates Bar or Downtown Matías Irish Pub. the many times recommended by the Hostel Colonial the Kilkenny Bar, a real gringos cave where you can dance with alive concerts of many North-American singers who did not want to return home and stayed in Buenos Aires rocking.
Reconquista St. is popular for the Irish event Saint Patrick´s Day every year together with the pubs of the surrounding, many changes has gotten so now it’s a quiet and picturesque pedestrian street soon will be known as animated point to enjoy.
Sidewalks were expanded and leveled with the pavement; it was used materials with quality. Placed new lighting, benches, trash baskets and parking for bikes and motorcycles, trees were planted, giving a freshness and greenness of the mass of cement that is Buenos Aires. Officers have increased outside the restaurants and bars with all the modern and cool vibes.
Florida St. is the busiest and uses to be the only pedestrian one in town, could make sense to create new pedestrian streets to calm down the maddening traffic of cars and people.
Soon Defensa Street will be ready to walk too in San Telmo, goes from Lezama Park to Plaza de Mayo Square and evidently future plans move forward to implement transportation such as bicycles, on the fact to realize advantages, Buenos Aires has streets parallel and straights. It was done in Scandinavian cities where is only allow bicycles instead of cars.
The government will have the challenge of maintaining the beauty and care appealing urban vandalism predominant that could ruin things and perhaps using the same security way as Puerto Madero district.
