Those who visit Buenos Aires during this month will enjoy a unique exhibition. For the first time in South America, the most important works of the father of Pop Art Andy Warhol will be presented. The most representative figure of the avant-garde movement originated in the late ’50 will star the show “Mr. America”, that’s taking place in the Latin American Museum of Buenos Aires (MALBA) since October 23rd, 2009 until February 22nd. 2010.
Pop Art, which main artists are Warhol itself, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and -later- Keith Haring, is a movement that seek to renew modern art focusing on the symbolic effect of the popular images (market or marketing images) and its artistic power. The emphasis wasn’t in art itself, but in its motivations. Popular culture can be artistic, that was their main statement. The beauty can be found in everyday matters: an advertisement, comics or the supermarket.
The exhibition shows the most representative works from the Slovakian-American artist (his real surname was Warhola), which include: the Campbell tomato soup series, the famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy and Mao, several self-portraits and two of his most controversial movies. After being presented in the capital of Colombia (Bogotá), and its actual presentation in Buenos Aires, its trip will end in San Pablo, Brazil.
There are a total of 170 works from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg. The exhibit can be visited everyday, from 12 to 8 PM, except Tuesdays. The ticket costs US$6 and Wednesdays, $1.50. Special discount for students and retired people.
