HOSTEL COLONIAL - CRAZY BUENOS AIRES - UNUSUAL URBAN PLANNING - POST # 2

Roque Sáenz Peña Avenue, known to the “porteños” as "Diagonal Norte". At first sight, a beautiful street, but a street.
However, as part of the magic that is Buenos Aires, if we go from Plaza de Mayo Square (beginning at the corner of San Martin St., 5 blocks from Hostel Colonial, walking toward the south) to Lavalle Square (at the crossroads of Lavalle and Libertad streets, near the Palace of Justice, 8 blocks from Hostel Colonial, walking toward the northwest) and look up, they will see the feature that defines this street of Buenos Aires. Which is it?
All the buildings in six blocks long (1200 meters long) are the same height, It was a rare decision of urban planning, supported by a City Government. The other diagonal of Buenos AiresDiagonal Sur”, Julio A. Roca Avenue, which begins almost at the same point, not at all these features.
Never in any other city in the world saw something like that, probably unaware of similar cases. Already part of our heritage, which is why I write this post. Can go see it, is nearly to the hostel and a beautiful walk, also the last block is pedestrian and bars invite you to drink.

Can go to my other blog and read another article published today on another curiosity of this street of Buenos Aires. The link

HOSTEL COLONIAL - CRAZY BUENOS AIRES - UNUSUAL URBAN PLANNING - POST # 1

In Parque Chas (20´in Subway from Hostel Colonial) there are 3 streets, that corner, where some houses have round shapes due to the geometry that the neighborhood demands, where Dublin, Gamarra and Londres are the same street even though there´re 3 different names and 2 people can be in Gandara and Londres streets and be 4 blocks away from eachother at the same time.
It´s quite difficult to understand the logic of a crossing between 2 streets, where 4 corners are located at some place and the other four are 4 blocks away from the first ones. Our mind, used to a simple streets crossing in a transversal way and remain like that all their way long, only allows a crossing of 4 cornes with only one intersection, so if 2 people are in 2 different corners they can meet eachother just by crossing the street. Crazy Buenos Aires!

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES & THE ENVIRONMENT

ENVIRONMENT

It has been a long time that Hostel Colonial Buenos Aires is working with the idea of improving the care and protection of natural and energetic resources, and this recessive year for the whole world comes as a great opportunity to apply new policies that helps not to aim the environment and save hard degradation feedstock.

To begin that we will implement a system of informative cards explaining how the room services of the hostel will be developed, improving also the personalized attention to each guest. These are the cards (image down this post) and the idea that they communicate. Also as a new policy, all of our cleaning products are ecologic, from trademarks like Lysoform, Diversey and others.

In the reception you are going to find 5 trash cans to separate organic, plastic, glass, paper and metallic garbage. Our sheets and blankets come from recycled material and we´ll be incorporating other materials. If there are any companies interested in this sustainable policies and helping the Hostel Colonial to get known as another of these companies, all of our guests, new products, we are into listening to new proposals.

We´ll open a new way, cities like Buenos Aires deserve that and the Hostel Colonial, with no doubts, a trend hostel, is following this course.

MEDIO AMBIENTE

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES - TRAVEL MEMORIES & IDEAS

TRAVEL MEMORIES

Every time I travel, many simultaneous ideas start coming to my mind, ideas to be applied in my different ventures later, the hostel or the restaurants, which, most of the times, get more advantages in the distribution.
This time it has not been like that. Why? Well, because I still keep my record of 49 known countries and the 219 visited cities, I don´t know if I can add some small villages of the brazilian northeast, a destination that I choose since some years to spend my vacations, and although I never repeat places, I always take some days to spend in Salvador -Bahia, Recife or Olinda to enjoy the most crowded carnivals in the world (crowded, not popular - this title belongs, with no doubts, to Rio de Janeiro).
Every time I travel with my family we stay in beach resorts or four, five stars hotels, and besides of that I keep strongly defending the accomodation system raised by a hostel, in fact when I travel alone I stay in hostels, specially the ones for young people of all ages, or those that invest their resources in entertainment, food, tours, expanding the number of destinations or the trip duration. I also think that a good hostel, well located like the Hostel Colonial Buenos Aires, or any other hostel worldwide located in a central neighborhood, is the best option for those that travel to cities like Buenos Aires for a weekend or like 3 days, this will be the trend for 2009.
Now, well, let´s go back to my trip and the ideas. The Brazil Open tennis tournament was finishing in Costa do Sauípe, and in the middle of the spanish player Robredo´s celebrations me and my son were walking to the hotel and all of a sudden something surprised me, the consciousness about being careful with the ecology (let´s agree, it is also a great business), especially if we think about the Sauípe dimension, practically a city, and the volumes in people, consequently, the volumes in food, waste, detergents etc also multiply.
I had the opportunity to talk with the hostel staff, with experts in this subject and professionals of the Projeto Tamar (I had also done that in other opportunities in Sergipe, Praia do Forte and Angra dos Reis) that really gave me some sustainable ideas to apply, adapting to the case, policies of environment protection in cities like Buenos Aires and, humbly, the Hostel Colonial.
Another thing that surprised me was the adjusted services inside the hotel, which performance is the summation of what is produced in each area (including many expense levels to the same services) to double the billing values of the All Inclusive. Although, due to our infrastructure, the hostel can not offer this support, we can offer to our guests, products of all ranges and for all budgets. (by having my own restaurants, I think of offering, 365 days a year, services of All Inclusive Hostel, that would be a great idea, though its difficult to develop in a short-term).
It will certainly be one of the news of Hostel Colonial in 2009.

HOSTEL COLONIAL BUENOS AIRES - THE TANGO, CANDIDATE TO BE A CULTURAL PATRIMONY OF THE HUMANITY

The Tango is one of the canditates to be a cultural and immaterial patrimony of the humanity (Oral traditions and expressions, spectacle arts, social uses, festivals, etc). The parisien Immaterial and Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity Safeguard Commision will meet on September of this year, in Abu Dhabi (Arabian Emirates) to approve or deny more than 100 canditates from different countries all over the world.
The Tango application is signed by the Argentine Secretary of Culture together with the Culture Ministry of Uruguay, and was presented by Buenos Aires and Montevideo. According to safe sources from UNESCO, Tango has a probability of almost 100% to be approved, due to the presented proposal.
This is not the first attempt, but the other ones haven´t succeded. The Tango, as a "rioplatense" cultural manifest, is presented as a genre that joins dance, music, poetry, song, cinema, "milongas", all of them interacting in a symbolic universe. It impregnates the imaginary of the Río de la Plata river, making itself a fundamental symbol of the rioplatense identity. It´s already known that the approval will depend on the support of some "alternative" countries like Korea, México, Kenya and the Arabian Emirates, all of them interested in the cultural Tango expression.
We have all the expectations to get this title. It means that the Tango will be recognized by the UNESCO as a sign of local identity and will have a symbolic value. It is going to involve all the artists and elements that interact in its existence. Buenos Aires and Montevideo have the compromise of creating a Tango Docummentation and Register Center, find old manuscripts, sound material, old traditional clothes and musical instruments. Besides that, they are going to create a Teaching Tango Dance Institute and a bandoneon asignature.
The Hostel Colonial and all the Tango lovers are all crossing their fingers.

HOSTEL COLONIAL - SOMOS BUENOS AIRES
