BUENOS AIRES HISTORICAL STREETCAR (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

Although today is probably just a memory or a curiosity, the STREETCAR (tramway) was once the most important mean of transportation in our city. In the first half of the XXth Century, Porteños preffered tramway as the optimate transportation. The tramway rails used to cover the whole city and surrounding suburbs. Almost dissapeared today, the Tramway Friends Association preserves the original wagon and route of Caballito neighborhood.

This “Historical Tramway” tour is one of the most beautiful and peculiar trips around our city. The ride is like going back in time. You can see the old tracks on some still-paved streets, to smell the old wagon wood and to experience the way Porteños travelled since 1870 to that Sunday February 19th of 1963, when tramways said goodbye to Buenos Aires. Fortunately, a group of fans preserved the old repairing station and some units.

The Caballito Tramway or Buenos Aires Historical Tramway, as its known, was recently awarded as one of the 12 milestones in world streetcars, because of its beauty and its maintenance. The International magazine “Tramways and Urban Transit” assessed this volunteer-operated service that’s free and still preserves the tradicional operation mode.

If you’re visiting Buenos Aires, you must take this historical and nostalgia trip around our city. The free rides in Caballito neighborhood leave every 20 minutes from the only stop in 500 Emilio Mitre Street (in the corner with José Bonifacio Street) in these schedule: from December to February: Saturdays and Holidays, from 5PM to 8.30PM and Sundays, from 10AM to 1PM and from 5PM to 8.30PM. From March to November: Saturdays and Holidays, from 4PM to 7.30PM and Sundays, from 10AM to 1PM and from 4PM to 7.30PM.
