CARNIVAL HOLIDAYS

Next Monday and Tuesdays February 11 and 12 Buenos Aires celebrates the Carnival Holidays. In these days, as throughout all February, our local “corsos” (carnival dancing groups) will fill the streets with joy. The music, color and classical dance steps of local “murgas” is an experience you can’t miss if visiting Buenos Aires this month. Hostel Colonial is close to many great murgas of the city.

This groups known as murgas which gather in corsos have been declared Cultural Patrimony of Buenos Aires City in 1997. They rescue our carnival traditions and are, at the same time, a unique artistic expression. The first corso was made in our city in 1869 and the music and dance which defines it has been transmitted from one generation to the other.

The lyrics of the murgas are political statements presented in a colorful ironic way. You can laugh and protest at the same time. The talk about the everyday problems or the traditions and symbols that distinguish every neighborhood. There exist at least one murga per neighborhood, and some of them have many (Palermo, Villa Lugano, Villa Crespo).

A great chance to discover our traditions while enjoying these Carnival holidays. In Hostel Colonial we are waiting for you!
