HOJE SE INAUGURA O METROBUS

Logo de quase um ano de trabalho, finalmente hoje realizará seus primeiros recorridos o novo sistema de transporte público da cidade de Buenos Aires, o Metrobus. Com unidades similares às mais modernas do sistema de ônibus urbanos da cidade, contará com pistas exclusivas de circulação que diminuirão os tempos da viagem e reduzirão a possibilidade de acidentes. Hostel Colonial te conta como é e aonde te leva o novo Metrobus.

Os ônibus duplos se deslocarão pela Avenida Juan B. Justo, uma das mais importantes do norte da nossa cidade, atravessando os bairros de Palermo, Villa Crespo, La Paternal, Villa General Mitre, Villa Santa Rita, Monte Castro e Liniers, entre outros. Circulará por pistas centrais exclusivas, separadas fisicamente do resto do trânsito no percurso de 21 estações, localizadas a 400 metros de distância uma da outra.



Ademais de acelerar os tempos de deslocamento, o Metrobus será mais seguro. As pistas exclusivas o separam do resto do transporte, evitando acidentes. Também foi estabelecido um limite de velocidade máxima de 60 km por hora. Além do Metrobus, só poderão circular pelas pistas os outros ônibus que passam pela avenida no seu recorrido: os números 166, 34, 109, 110, 53, 99 e 172.

As estações estarão monitoradas por câmaras de seguridade e o serviço terá um cronograma de horários pré-estabelecidos (coordenados pela tecnologia GPS). O custo da passagem é igual que qualquer outra viagem de ônibus, embora poupando 20 minutos (no recorrido completo). “Como o metrô, mais sobre o asfalto”, tem sido definido. Um novo jeito de se deslocar rápido e seguro pela cidade.

THE MUSEUM OF THE BICENTENARY

Last week, during the celebration of the 201 years of Argentina, was inaugurated the Museum of the Bicentenary. The place is located right behind the Casa Rosada and gathers symbols, souvenirs and images from our 200 years of history. One of its outstanding objects is a mural by the Mexican David Alfaro Siqueiros, made in the 30’s and recently restored for the public.

Back in 1810, when Argentina born as an independent country, the Casa Rosada did not exist: in its place there was a Fort. Behind this fort, would be located the Taylor Custom (1855), where all the goods –mainly from Europe- arrived. The Fort is no longer there, but the Custom was preserved and restored. Today, the Custom houses this museum which preserves this marvelous architectural patrimony.



The place is spacious and luminous, more than 5.000 square meters keeping real treasures of our history. The mural of Siqueiros was lost for more than 80 years. It was found some years ago in containers inside a house, restored and placed on this museum. The work is a masterpiece by one of the greatest Mexican muralists, in collaboration with the best Argentine painters of that time.

In the Museum you can also find a woodcut of Archangel Saint Michael, patron saint of the Fort, and a royal coat of arms in marble, both from the XVIII Century. You can also see rests of the old Fort; furniture, cars and different object which belonged to Argentine presidents and a curious portrait of Perón, among others. The Museum of the Bicentenary can be visited from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10AM to 6PM.

PETTORUTI, NOSSO GRANDE PINTOR NO MALBA

Desde amanhã 27 de maio e até 27 de junho, um dos maiores pintores de começos do século passado, Emilio Pettoruti, estará no Museu de Arte Latino Americano (MALBA, Avenida Figueroa Alcorta 3415). Abarcando os primeiros trabalhos do grande pintor argentino, a exibição leva o nome “Pettoruti e a arte abstrata. 1914-1949”. Imperdível para os amantes da arte e da pintura.

A seleção inclui 37 obras realizadas pelo artista durante a primeira metade do século XX. A proposta é repensar a relação de Pettoruti com a arte abstrata, iniludível para compreender a maior parte da sua produção artística. Exibem-se colagens, óleos e aquarelas, realizados pelo artista entre 1914 e 1949, período que abarca seus primeiros anos na Itália, seu regresso à Argentina e suas posteriores viagens pela Europa antes de se instalar em Paris.



Nascido na Argentina, boa parte da formação artística de Pettoruti teve lugar na Europa. Ali foi fervente admirador das vanguardas artísticas nascentes e, na sua primeira obra, se vê a influência do futurismo e, mais tarde, do cubismo. No seu regresso para a Argentina, foi precursor da vanguarda plástica junto a Xul Solar. Recebeu muitas críticas do público local que só tinha contato com a pintura tradicional e, como todo gênio, o reconhecimento chegou muitos anos após disso.

Esta exibição é a oportunidade de conhecer sua primeira produção, marcada pela influência da vanguarda e menos conhecida que suas últimas obras, onde desenvolveu esse estilo próprio e reconhecido. As obras que integram a exibição provem de coleções particulares e de coleções públicas como aquelas do Museu Nacional de Belas Artes de Buenos Aires e o Museu de Artes Plásticas “Eduardo Sívori” de Buenos Aires, entre outras.

REVOLUTION DAY IN ARGENTINA

This Wednesday May 25th, Argentina commemorates the day when a popular revolution liberated the territory from the Spanish Kingdom, back in 1810. That day, the people gathered in Plaza de Mayo, in front of the Cabildo (former Government seat) and asked for the removal of the Viceroy Cisneros. That night, Argentina formed the First Government Board and took its first steps as a free nation. 6 years after that came the Independence Declaration.

As usual in this date, the city is covered in sky blue and white colors and the celebrations are in the order of the day. A large festival with local musicians and artists will take place in the Plaza de Mayo since 3PM. The Avenida de Mayo, as close to our Hostel Colonial as the Plaza, is another classic historical place for celebrations.



Some typical customs of May 25th are: to carry some kind of badge with the colors of Argentina (usually a sky blue and white ribbon); to eat the most traditional dish of our cuisine, the locro, or some other classic options as the empanadas and the favorite dessert called pastelitos. You can find out what are these dishes about in many restaurants across the city (and especially in Downtown).

Finally, for sports fans, the Argentine Soccer/Football team will be playing again the Paraguayan team in the River Plate Stadium. This match is part of the celebrations and also training for the America’s Soccer/Football Cup which will take place in our country next July. Our city symbol, the Obelisco, is also celebrating its 75 years decorating the 9 de Julio Avenue (it was inaugurated on May 23rd, 1936).

THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY

In the traditional neighborhood of Montserrat, near San Telmo, it’s located the Museum of the City. The institution is distributed in several patrimonial houses which are among the first ones built in our city. Nowadays, the main entrance is on the old Farmacia de la Estrella (412 Alsina St.). The main house (Elorriaga’s family house), just steps away from the Farmacia is being restored. Hostel Colonial offers you a glimpse of the old Buenos Aires.

The building’s current facade (1895) belongs to the fusion period between Italian and French architecture, and its opening coincides with the opening of the Avenida de Mayo. It’s one of the city’s oldest drugstores and it conserves its original furniture and mural paintings. Just along this building, it’s the House of Querubines (Defensa 219/223), a three-story mansion with many rooms preserving the furniture, ornaments, etc.



The proposal of the museum is visiting this traditional group of houses which still conserve the atmosphere of its time, so you can know Buenos Aires as it was more than a century ago. Watch the furniture, the ornaments, the technology of that time, the clothing, among others. The museum is a different way to know our city. A house says a lot about its owners, their time and the society they live in.

Not only the houses which belong to the museum have been restored, all of the facades in the corner of Alsina and Defensa streets were renewed. They are part of a larger plan to seeking to preserve the Historic Urban Area, the oldest center of our city, south of Plaza de Mayo. The Museum of the City shows you the evolution of Buenos Aires and its habits from a new and different sight.

BUENOS AIRES, PURE DESIGN

Tomorrow, Thursday the 19th, will star the Pure Design Fair 2011, a perfect place to update in the new fashion tendencies in several design areas. Until Wednesday May 25th -from 1PM to 10PM- in the Yellow Pavilion of La Rural (Av. Sarmiento 2704) you will find the best of the Argentine and Latin American design avant-garde. This year the leit motiv is “colors”. Hostel Colonial tells you about the many surprises that are expected.

The main objective of the fair is to promote the last design tendencies, inspired in colors for this edition. The color gives life to designs. The life and the design are full of colors and the creations fill this fair with color. Pure Design gathered over 100 thousand people and more than 300 designers in its last edition. The designers participated through stands in the different categories.



Here, you can find from clothing design and fashion accessories, jewelry and contemporary handicrafts to equipment, objects, sustainable design, art and lighting. This edition adds the category “Pure Taste”, with boutique gastronomy, allowing the visitors to enjoy and buy an exclusive selection of products, food and canned beverages.

This eleventh edition will have the following thematic spaces: Pure Green, Sustainable World, Dry Square, the Walk of Art and the Selection. There will also be workshops and business rounds, along with the presentation of the Pure Design awards. Besides the most important design fair of Latin America, Pure Design is a platform for new talents. If you are visiting Buenos Aires these days and you love design, you can’t miss this fair.

CAMPEONATO DE DANÇA DE TANGO NA CIDADE

Já começou o 9no. Campeonato de Dança da Cidade, um evento dedicado à dança mais portenha: o tango. Até o domingo próximo, você poderá desfrutar dos pares dançando nas ruas com o objetivo de se somar às instâncias finais do Mundial do Tango que se realiza no mês de agosto. Hostel Colonial te conta quais são as esquinas aonde você poderá desfrutar o espetáculo e, inclusive, se animar a dançar um pouquinho.

Já têm acontecido as rondas classificatórias e agora vamos para o mais interessante: as semifinais e a grande final das categorias Tango Salão (Adulto e Senior), Milonga e Valse. Hoje haverá uma grande milonga (encontro de bailarinos) as 6PM no Centro Cultural Centeya (Avenida San Juan 3255). A final se realizará o sábado 21 e a milonga de fechamento será o domingo 22, as 6PM na tradicional esquina de San Juan e Boedo, com orquestra ao vivo e uma exibição dos campeões.



O evento começou o sábado 7, na Glorieta de Belgrano (11 de Septiembre e Echeverría), com uma grande milonga de apertura. São 16 em total os lugares que abrem as portas nos diferentes bairros portenhos, oferecendo aos bailarinos de tango de Buenos Aires e do mundo a possibilidade de participar do certame. Os pares se inscrevem assistindo diretamente o mesmo dia da competência, na milonga escolhida.

Si você gosta do tango ou quer tirar maravilhosas fotos da nossa dança tradicional, averigue onde estarão as milongas e venha com a sua câmara. Claro que, se você pode dançar tango, terá a oportunidade de participar; e si você não sabe, quiçá te contagies do espírito do lugar e se anime para dar os primeiros passos.

ArteBA: OUR FINEST ART EXHIBITION

An historical edition of the classic art exhibition ArteBA is coming. This year 2011 is the 20th edition of the event which gathers the best of the new expressions of Argentine, Latin American and international art. From May 19th to 23rd, you can visit a place which combines all kind of artistic disciplines. The event also works as a launching platform for new art. Hostel Colonial tells you what you can find in the most important art exhibition of the year.

ArteBA will present more than 70 local and international art galleries with more than 1000 works of art. You can also find the traditional Young Space, which introduces to the public the emerging talents of the art world. Last, but not least, the event has renewed spaces for avant-garde art, and the long waited contests and works acquisition programs.



The largest bet of this year is the new U-TURN Project Rooms, in charge of the Iranian independent curator Abaseh Mirvali. A special room whichwill bring the best of experimental international art with unpublished works of 18 artists from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. An experience you should not miss which seems to be the star of this ArteBA 2011 edition.

The exhibition is scheduled from Mondays to Sundays, from 1PM to 9PM in the green and blue pavilions of La Rural (2704 Sarmiento Avenue). The price of the tickets is 38 Argentine pesos (less than 10 American dollars). From our Hostel Colonial, you can get there by subway, D line (Plaza Italia station).

THE TOWER OF BABEL… IN BUENOS AIRES

According to the Old Testament, The Tower of Babel was built by men to reach the sky. Certainly, you can find some of that in this replica made of books in the San Martín Square of Buenos Aires. Perhaps you won’t reach the sky, but the metaphor of elevating yourself through reading has been achieved. A work by the Argentine plastic artist Marta Minujin which is over 8 floors tall and it’s located just a few blocks away from our Hostel Colonial.

You can visit it since last Thursday, when the official opening took place and the artist stated: “I want to unify the world through books; I do not want a single language, but all the languages you can find”. The work consists of two large spirals 28 meters tall made of books in such different languages as: Swedish, Korean, Russian, Spanish, English, French, German, Arab and dozens of other languages coexisting in the tower.



The main objective of the work is to celebrate that Buenos Aires has been chosen World Book Capital 2011 by the UNESCO. The tower stands for pluralism and diversity of cultures, races and religions which characterizes our city. That’s why it has over 26.000 books donated by 52 different countries. There’s a tour round the tower, in small groups of 10 people, every day from 10AM to 10PM.

In the tour, you can walk through the books and to listen a recording repeating the word “book” in different languages. Once the tower is dismantled (on Saturday May 28th), the books will be catalogued and will become part of the first multilingual library of our city. An event you should not miss if visiting Buenos Aires in this time of the year, just steps away from our Hostel.

CICLO DE CINEMA BRASILEIRO: MAIO

Como cada mês, a Embaixada do Brasil (Cerrito 1350) apresenta o ciclo “Cinema na Embaixada”. No auditório e com entrada livre, este mês de maio estará dedicado aos trabalhadores. Todas as terças as 7PM haverá filmes brasileiros com subtítulo em espanhol com temas que encaram as problemáticas dos obreiros brasileiros em diferentes épocas e contextos. Hostel Colonial te conta quais são esses filmes.

Terça 10: Eles não usam black-tie (1981). Filme de Leon Hirszman que trata sobre os conflitos, contradições e anseios da classe trabalhadora de fins dos anos 70, durante a última crise da ditadura militar. Situa, em polos antagônicos, a esperança na ação coletiva e a aposta nas saídas individuais, como alternativas de vida para os trabalhadores.





Martes 17: ABC da Greve (1979/1990). Outro filme de Hirszman, esta vez retratando os acontecimentos na região do ABC paulista, acompanhando a trajetória do movimento de 150 mil metalúrgicos na luta por melhores salários e condições de vida. A greve, a confrontação com o governo militar e a intervenção no sindicato do setor.

Martes 24: Peones (2004). Un film de Eduardo Coutinho que hace foco en la historia personal de 21 operarios del ABC paulista que tomaron parte de las huelgas de 1979 y 1980 -liderados por Luiz Inácio Lula Da SIlva-, pero permanecieron en el anonimato. Ellos hablan de sus orígenes, de la participación en el movimiento y de los caminos que abrieron desde entonces.

Martes 31: São Paulo: Sociedad Anónima (1965). El film situado en los años 50 cuenta la historia de Carlo. Guiándose por las oportunidades inmediatas que la sociedad ofrece, ingresa a una gran empresa. Después, acepta un cargo en una fábrica de piezas de autos, en la cual se vuelve gerente. Sin proyecto personal de vida o perspectivas de oponerse a la vida que rechaza, sólo le queda huir.

BELGRANO R: TIME FOR A WALK

If you want to know one of the most beautiful residential neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Hostel Colonial provides you with a small guide to Belgrano R. This non-official neighborhood is made up of three Porteño neighborhoods: Villa Urquiza, Villa Ortúzar and -of course- Belgrano. Its centennial trees, the old and new mansions and the cobbled-paving, add up to the tranquility of a perfect place to go for a walk.

The letter “R” that accompanies its name comes from the neighborhood’s railway station which used to visit the city of “Rosario”. Nevertheless, many people believe that the “R” comes from the “residential” spirit. There are about 110 blocks delimited by Cramer Avenue, Monroe Avenue, De Los Incas Avenue and Holmberg Street.



In the middle of the XIX Century, the area was occupied by the old racetrack. The place was the redesigned to allow the course of the railway (a project leaded by a British company) and the adjoining lands were inhabited by the English employees of the railway. The construction of European-styled luxurious mansions and the care for the life quality of its inhabitants depicted its unique style.

Its main streets are the Avenues La Pampa, Melián, Forest and Rómulo Naón. It houses some of the Buenos Aires British community symbols as its exclusive schools, the first Argentine football/soccer club (Alumni), the Saint Patrick Church (in the corner of Echeverría and Estomba Streets), among others. We recommend to walk the streets of Belgrano R (specially Mendoza and Melián) and to have a coffee on Retamas Café (in the corner of La Pampa and Heredia).

O MUSEU DE ARTE DECORATIVA

O Museu Nacional de Arte Decorativa é um espaço ideal para passar uma tarde. Combina a mágica do palácio histórico que o aloja com uma variada coleção de objetos decorativos da época, uma biblioteca e um bonito café-restaurante. Perto do Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, sobre a Avenida del Libertador 1902, um espaço que conserva a mágica da Buenos Aires de começos do século XX.

Construído entre 1911 e 1917, foi nos começos a residência da família Errázuriz-Alvear. O matrimônio que encarregou a construção, interessado na arte e nas antiguidades, aproveitou os anos vividos na Europa para adquirir uma valiosa coleção de obras de arte europeu e oriental que, maiormente, integram hoje o patrimônio do museu. Centro da vida social de começos do século XX, o palácio aloja entre seus muros histórias daquele tempo.

Em 1937, o Governo Nacional adquiriu a residência (maravilhoso exemplo do estilo eclético francês), os móveis de época, as pinturas, as esculturas e os objetos de arte decorativa. Entre estes últimos, se contam originais coleções de armas, esculturas, miniaturas, móveis, ourivesaria, peças orientais, pintura, porcelana e tapizes que podem se desfrutar junto às exibições itinerantes na visita regular.

O lugar organiza regularmente concertos (em Maio há um ciclo de música barroca) e visitas guiadas em vários idiomas, dedicadas a cada andar e coleção do museu. Conta com uma boutique e livraria com lembranças exclusivas e originais objetos de artesanato, além de um excepcional café-restaurante chamado de “Croque Madame”. FREE MOZART CONCERT IN THE CATHEDRAL

A unique event for music enthusiasts will take place tomorrow Thursday the 5th in the Metropolitan Cathedral (in front of the Plaza de Mayo). The Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor will be played by the Public Radio & Television Orchestra. It’s the perfect concert in the perfect place. An experience named “Mozart for everybody” and a melody which transcends generations, styles and musical tastes.

Just 6 blocks away from our Hostel Colonial, with free entrance, this Thursday the 5th, at 7PM, the orchestra conducted by maestro Marcelo Zurlo, will play this wonderful masterpiece of the Austrian composer. The Requiem is the last work of one of the most famous musical geniuses of our history. The event will have the presence of female soloists Laura Rizzo (soprano) and May Hemmingsen (mezzosoprano), the male soloists Fermín Prieto (tenor) and Lucas Debevec Mayer (bass), and the coral group of the Lagun Onak Association, conducted by maestro Miguel Pesce.



The Mozart’s Requiem is on the most renowned ecclesiastic works of all times. When the musician suddenly passed away, the requiem was completed until the end of the “Dies Irae” sequence, while the rest was sketched in different stages of development until Franz Xaver Süssmayr concluded it. The fact that a requiem, casually, was the last work of Mozart, surrounds the masterpiece with a mysterious and misfortune halo.

For music lovers, for those who want to enjoy an unforgettable experience, the Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor in the Buenos Aires Cathedral is something special. If you’re visiting our city, you should save some time for this magic moment.

ARTE NO METRÔ PORTENHO

O metrô portenho está cheio de mágica. Não só pela antiga Linha A, a mais antiga de Latino-América, com seus velhos vagões de portas de apertura manual que nos transportam à Buenos Aires de um século atrás. Há outros detalhes que enchem de arte a circulação cotidiana de portenhos e turistas. Um exemplo são as majólicas andaluzas que decoram as estações das linhas C e D, e que agora são parte de uma amostra fotográfica.

“Laços subterrâneos” é a amostra que procura capturar a variedade e diversidade do patrimônio arquitetônico que a cidade tem. As majólicas andaluzas que revistem muitas gares, escadas e estações do nosso metrô foram o foco. Murais que mostram imagens de cidades espanholas e acontecimentos da nossa história se misturam com tramados, conhecidos na Espanha como majólica de laço pela similitude da sua forma com uma cinta ou fio que se entrelaça.



Estações como Avenida de Mayo, Moreno, Independencia e San Juan da linha C são exemplos próximos que você pode visitar e que mostram diferentes patrões de inspiração hispano-árabe ou renascentista. As mesmas foram realizadas na década de 1930 em Sevilha, Espanha, e trazidas para Buenos Aires com o objetivo de embelecer os passeios cotidianos.

A amostra fotográfica, que pode se visitar no Museu Larreta (Avenida Juramento 2291), nos convida para reflexionar acerca do valor e a vigência contemporânea de um patrimônio significativo e único. As fotos que estiveram a cargo de Javier Agustín Rojas estarão no Museu até o 8 de maio, de segundas a sextas de 1PM a 7PM e os sábados, domingos e feriados de 10AM a 8PM. As estações do metrô estão todos os dias, pertinho do nosso Hostel Colonial.
