THE BEST TENNIS IN BUENOS AIRES (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

From February 14th to 20th, the Buenos Aires ATP Tennis Tournament (Copa Claro 2011) will take place. In the most traditional tennis redoubt of our city, the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, some of the best tennis players in the world and all the great Argentine players will dazzle the spectators on the first tournament of the year on clay. Hostel Colonial tells you who will participate and where you can see them.

The ATP will have seven of the thirty best players of the world including a Top-10 as the Spanish David Ferrer (recent finalist in the Australian Open) and the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, besides local stars headed by David Nalbandian. Some other international players will participate a the Spanish Nicolás Almagro, Albert Montañés, Juan Carlos Ferrero (last winner of this tournament) and Tommy Robredo, along with the Italian Starace.

Among the Argentine players, besides David Nalbandian (last Argentine to win the tournament in 2008), there will be a mix of established players and new promises as: Juan Mónaco, Leonardo Mayer, Horacio Zeballos, Máximo González, Diego Junqueira, Federico Del Bonis, Juan Pablo Brzezicki, Sebastián Decoud, Facundo Bagnis, Andrés Molteni, Pablo Galdon and Martín Vassallo Argüello.

In the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club in Palermo neighborhood, you can enjoy all the games in three different courts (including the main court). As every year, the tournament will be disputed in day sessions (11.30AM on Mondays and Tuesdays and 1.45PM on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) and night sessions (Mondays to Fridays at 7.30PM). For the last Saturday, the singles semifinals will be played at 7Pm and 9PM. Sunday 20th will have the great single final at 5PM.

O PASSEIO DA FAMA PORTENHO (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Ao estilo californiano, a Cidade de Buenos Aires terá seu próprio “Passeio da Fama” que tributará personagens destacados da cultura. Não obstante, a temática do Passeio de Buenos Aires será diferente, incluirá letras de músicos (locais e internacionais) que tributaram a nossa cidade. Hostel Colonial te conta como será e onde você poderá desfrutar este novo atrativo.

O passeio estará emprazado sobre a Avenida Callao. Desde seu começo em fronte do Congresso da Nação, na Avenida Rivadavia e até seu fim sobre a Avenida del Libertador, no bairro de Recoleta. Serão quase 60 baldosas grandes com letras dedicadas à cidade de Buenos Aires. Um passeio musical e turístico que começará ter forma no próximo mês de fevereiro, quando alguns dos artistas tributados visitem a cidade para a inauguração da sua contribuição.

Músicos muito diferentes como a grande voz do tango, Carlos Gardel, a rainha do pop, Madonna ou o baladista espanhol Alejandro Sanz, se misturarão neste ressonante tributo para Buenos Aires. A ideia é chegar perto das 100 baldosas, quase três por quadra. A primeira inauguração será o dia 17 de fevereiro com o maestro do tango Horacio Ferrer como protagonista com a sua “Balada para um loco”, clássica canção que musicalizasse Astor Piazzola.

Outros dos artistas presentes são: o tanguero Enrique Santos Discépolo com sua letra “Cafetín de Buenos Aires”, o roqueiro Andrés Calamaro com “No Buenos Aires” e o cantante melódico guatemalteco Ricardo Arjona com “Cómo olvidarme de Martha”, entre outras muitas “Baldosas que cantam” como se tem chamado ao projeto.

DINOSAURS IN BUENOS AIRES (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

The great animatronic dinosaurs exhibition which travelled round the world in 2010, is now presenting in our city. It’s an entertaining option for this Porteño summer in the complex known as La Rural (4200 Santa Fe Avenue, Palermo). Jurassic World is its name, honoring the famous Steven Spielberg movie -Jurassic Park-, which revive the interest for the first inhabitants of our planet.

To have fun and to learn -all in one- is the idea. An exhibition for the whole family but equally amusing for people of all ages, the place houses 19 robotic dinosaurs done to scale and set in places that simulate their original environment or the cages of the mythical Jurassic Park of the movie. It’s a trip that will take you 65 million years back in time, when these giants ruled the globe.

The exhibition favorite is, of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, 14 meters tall with defying expression. A group of Paleontology student of the University of Buenos Aires will accompany you through this imaginary trip, giving you precise information and calming the kids who are often scared of these peculiar monsters. Also for kids, there’s a special space for them to play to be paleontologists, making excavations or watching movies in a mini cinema.

Jurassic World is waiting for you from Mondays to Sundays from 11.30AM to 8PM, in the Ocher Pavilion of La Rural. The price of the tickets is 40 Argentine pesos (10 American dollars). The kids between two and four years pay only 25 pesos (almost 8 dollars). For working days there’s a special promotion for four members’s families (two young and two old) paying 100 pesos (25 dollars).

AS MELHORES HISTORIETAS (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Uma das exibições mais completas da historieta argentina, volta para a cidade de Buenos Aires, logo da sua exitosa apresentação na Feria do Livro de Frankfurt, Alemanha (em outubro do ano passado). Mais de 200 desenhos de um gênero que tem na Argentina um dos seus máximos expoentes a nível mundial há muito tempo. Risos, aventuras, crítica social e todos os elementos do comic, em uma amostra imperdível.

O nome é “Nos tocou fazer rir” e cobre o amplio espectro dos artistas locais mais representativos e as novas figuras do gênero. Incluem livros, vídeos e originais de maestros como Roberto Fontanarrosa, Hermenegildo Sabat e Quino, entre outros. A apresentação é no Espaço de Arte da Fundação OSDE (Rua Suipacha 658), a apenas quatro quadras do nosso Hostel Colonial.

Outras das grandes figuras presentes na amostra são: o pai da historieta argentina Alberto Breccia, Caloi, Crist, García Ferré, Grillo, Landrú, Liniers, Maitena, Mayol, Mosquito, Nik, Nine, el Niño Rodríguez, Oski, Pratt, Rep, Solano López e Tute. Mais de 150 desenhistas e roteiristas cujos trabalhos se exibirão até o 12 de março, de 12 a 20 horas, com entrada livre.

O recorrido se organiza em três grandes eixos: uma parte sobre “A Fundação, a Terra e a Urbe” –onde se incluem o tango, o futebol e a imigração-; e uma segunda que refere ao que não se deve repetir “Nunca Mais”, que remite aos golpes militares, o gatilho fácil e a fome. A terceira seção é um tributo a Héctor Germán Oesterheld, um dos maiores roteiristas da nossa historieta.

A JANUARY FULL OF TANGO (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

In these holidays, the great Porteño passion for tango doesn’t stop. That’s why you can enjoy a variety of shows in the Borges Cultural Center (on the corner of Viamonte St. and San Martín St.), seven days a week. Music and dance shake hands in spectacles with different goals and the same idea: to revitalize tango, the great rhythm of Buenos Aires. Hostel Colonial offers you the alternatives to enjoy the best tango.

Con Alma de Tango. Live orchestra and five dancing couples give this show a dynamic and ambitious presentation. Tango at its finest with his most aesthetic and attractive face. Mondays and Wednesdays at 8PM.

Bien de Tango. It’s a musical which proposes a magic trip to the Golden years of tango (the 20’s). 20 artists cover all styles of this genre in a refined fusion of dance and live orchestra. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM.

Tango Emotion. The great pianist, composer and arranger Enrique Cuttini, and its fantastic cast, introduces a show mixing the force of the music, the sensuality of the dance and the heat of the poetry. Sundays at 8PM.

Buenos Aires, Pasión de Tango. It’s a classic in the Porteño billboard which mixtures passion, elegance, romance and craftiness in an authentic Argentine tango show. It counts on a great wardrobe and impeccable choreography. Tuesdays at 8PM.

OS FANTASMAS DE SAN TELMO (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Um interessante tour para aproveitar na cidade é o conhecido como “Os fantasmas de San Telmo”. Um jeito diferente de conhecer um dos bairros mais antigos da cidade e, por isso, dos que têm mais histórias, mitos e lendas. A ideia de “Os fantasmas” é um recorrido noturno pelo bairro em busca de os fantasmas que os vizinhos afirmam ter visto e aos que um grupo de atores lhes da vida.

Disse-se que uma mulher se converteu em uma árvore da Praça Dorrego, um choro distante acompanha o relato. Uma velha cisterna descobre-se num lado da praça, novos choros e queixumes dão marco ao relato e à representação teatral que nos transporta à época da colônia espanhola, quando apenas o Centro e San Telmo alojavam a população toda de Buenos Aires.

O caminho segue pelas diferentes ruas, as historias cativam aos visitantes, assustam aos meninos e assombram aos maiores. Fantasmas com historias torturadas, bons fantasmas, fantasmas penitentes, fantasmas para todos os gostos e historias comovedoras que revivem da mão de um grupo de atores. Uma proposta diferente que ganha cada vez mais adeptos.

A recorrida parte da famosa Praça Dorrego (Humberto 1° 400), coração do bairro de San Telmo e, por 40 minutos, nos leva por um mundo de espíritos e historias curiosas. HOW TO PICK YOUR BEER IN BUENOS AIRES (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

The offer of beers in Buenos Aires has increasingly grown in the last years. The progressive development of taste and the success of some local breweries have improved the quality and quantity of available beers. In this new market, it is not easy to find the best choices -neither for Porteños nor for those who visit us-. That’s the reason why Hostel Colonial gives you some tips for you to find and enjoy the best beers.

First you’ll find the classics, leaded by Quilmes, the most famous Argentine beer. It has three varieties: the blond “Cristal” and the new versions “Red” and “Stout”. Other typical Argentine beers are Palermo, Warsteiner, Isenbeck and Bieckert. Also easy to find are some of the most renowned beers around the world such as: Budweiser, Heineken, Brahma (Brazil), Stella Artois, Corona (Mexico), among others.

In a higher quality standard is the premium line of Quilmes: Patagonia. You can choose any of its different tastes “Weisse” (corn), Bohemian Pilsener” and “Amber Lager”. Also in the premium segment, you’ll enjoy the excellent full-bodied beers of Otro Mundo in its varieties “Golden Ale”, “Strong Red Ale” and “Nut Brown Ale”. Specially the red one is highly recommendable.

Some other hand-made beers you should taste are the Antares, a local classic that also owns a bar in Palermo (Antares Bat, 1447 Armenia Street). GLACIARIUM: NOVO MUSEU DO GELO (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Em uma das áreas mais turísticas da Argentina, a cidade de El Calafate, na província de Santa Cruz, tem se inaugurado o primeiro museu do gelo chamado de Glaciarium. Seu nome tributa aos gigantes de gelo que dominam a paisagem patagônica e que está muito perto do Glaciar Perito Moreno, estrela do sul argentino. Hostel Colonial te conta como é este novo museu.

O objetivo principal da instalação é conscientizar sobre a importância do cuidado dos glaciares pela raça humana, considerando-os não só como uma beleza natural senão também como a grande reserva de agua doce que representam. Blocos de gelo, glaciares e enormes capôs de gelo povoam uma exibição de dioramas (lâminas com transparências) em uma ampla superfície de 60.000m2 na estepe patagônica.

Com vista ao Lago Argentino, no Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, abre as suas portas o ano inteiro aos mais de 350.000 turistas que recebe El Calafate. Com uma arquitetura de vanguarda, Glaciarium tem um hall central que copia as linhas e a magnitude de um glaciar. De ângulos retos, enormes janelas e formas irregulares, é um dos poucos museus glaciológicos do mundo, que abandona a ideia do museu tradicional com escaparates e vitrinas para converter os visitantes em protagonistas.

Entre seus maiores atrativos, conta com um auditório para 120 pessoas no qual se projetam películas 3D de alta definição, com vistas aéreas das paisagens da Patagônia e dos seus Parques Nacionais. Também se abrirá pronto o “Glacio-Bar”, um bar rodeado de paredes de gelo onde os tragos se servirão em copos de gelo. Amostras de arte e fotografia completam a oferta do Glaciarium.

THE END OF RALLY DAKAR (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

Yesterday, Sunday 16th, the Argentina-Chile Rally Dakar 2011 was officially closed in La Rural, in Palermo neighborhood. The main star was the Argentine Alejandro Patronelli, winner in squads, and second Argentine to win the Dakar (after his brother Marcos in the 2010 edition, also in squads). The rest of the winners in the different categories joined him in the award ceremony.

Patronelli’s triumph in squads confirms the Argentine world supremacy in this discipline and gives us a new reason to celebrate, after the confirmation that Dakar 2012 will also take place in our territory. It is expected a slight change in the route for next year which might include a third country as Peru or Brazil. Notwithstanding what the final choice is, our country and Chile are already confirmed to host the competition.

The other winners in the Sunday afternoon were the Qatar prince Nasser Al-Attiyah, in cars, the Spanish Marc Coma, king of bikes and the russian Vladimir Chagin, who won in trucks for the seventh time in his life. It was “one of the three toughest Dakars in history”, said Ettiene Lavigne, main organizer of the competition, who also praised Argentina and Chile’s landscapes.

The 2010 and 2011 editions of Argentina-Chile Dakar have shown the world the beauty of 11 different Argentine provinces, besides Buenos Aires City, where the official start and end takes place (in our symbolic Obelisco). The confirmation of Dakar 2012 is a joy for all Argentines and a new invitation for the whole world to visit us and to enjoy the most famous rally in the world in our city.

LEMBRANDO-SE DO GARDEL (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Buenos Aires propõe um verão cheio de Gardel. As homenagens para o grande cantor argentino nunca param e, por isso, agora o Museu Casa Carlos Gardel (Jean Jaures 735, bairro do Abasto) oferece a exibição “Tango, 1910”. Até fins do fevereiro, uma amostra que cativou milhares de visitantes durante o passado ano 2010 e que continua deslumbrando. O tango, suas origens e a figura simbólica do Gardel.

Na particular casa onde morou Gardel e a sua mãe, está localizada esta exibição que toma o tango como uma expressão artística que responde a um processo histórico concreto de mestiçagem cultural da povoação rio-platense imigratória. Processo que reconfigurou a sociedade a partir das ultimas décadas do século XIX. Tango 1910 tenta mostrar ao tango como um reflexo da cosmovisão da época.

A exibição tenta dar conta da incipiente popularidade da música cidadã. Os selos discográficos Columbia, Victor e Nacional Era, que a distribuíam; o florescimento de inúmeras imprensas e editoriais que cobrem a cidade toda com partituras e a aparição dos primeiros músicos e compositores (Bardi, Espósito, Medizabal, Arolas, Villoldo) que hoje são marcas inconfundíveis da guarda velha.

No meio desta explosão, a figura do Gardel, verdadeiro selo e símbolo do tango a nível mundial. O Museu conta com visitas com guia as segundas, quartas e sextas-feiras a 1PM e os sábados, domingos e feriados as 1PM, 3PM y 5PM. Quem o visite nestes meses de verão, também poderá desfrutar de alguns dos seus filmes, onde se aprecia toda sua habilidade como ator e músico.

SAN MARTÍN SQUARE (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

Just a few blocks away from our Hostel Colonial is located one of the most significant squares of Buenos Aires City: San Martín Square. Main green space in Retiro neighborhood, this square is almost as old as the city itself. The current design belongs to Carlos León Thays, son of the landscape gardener who planned the largest and most beautiful parks of Buenos Aires. A space you should not miss.

The square is divided in two sectors: first, the lawn covered hill on Del Libertador Avenue where you can see the Monumental Tower (or Tower of the English, as it’s frequently called); and then, the plain in the end of the famous pedestrian street Florida, surrounded by historic buildings as the Kavanagh (first skyscraper in Argentina), the Paz Palace (current Military Circle), among others.

Historians estimate that the first use of this space was religious: the San Sebastián Chapel, in the times of the Spanish colony. After that, the place was taken up by the house of a governor and the factory of a British sea industry. In 1801, a bullring was built there and in 1812, San Martín, the Liberator of South America, used the space to organize its troupes. The square took its name from this great hero.

Nowadays, the San Martín Square houses the Monument to the General San Martín and the Independence Armies, the Monument to the soldier who fell in combat in the Malvinas War and several sculptures hidden among the leafy trees. The square is also a privileged public space for the organization of all kind of events such as: the transmission in giant screen of soccer/football matches, outdoors artistic exhibitions and cultural gatherings. There’s always something happening on San Martín Square.

ATIVIDADES NO VERÃO PORTENHO (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Ainda a maioria dos portenhos abandona a cidade durante os meses do verão (em especial em janeiro e fevereiro), muita gente fica e muitos outros chegam para nos visitar. Por essa razão, o Governo da Cidade de Buenos Aires tem planejado uma série de atividades culturais para fazer mais entretida a estação cálida. Cinema, teatro, tango e dança em um verão para desfrutar em Buenos Aires.

Ademais do auto cinema no Rosedal, que já temos mencionado aqui, há mais de 100 atividades gratuitas para todos os gostos e idades. Teatro nas praças da cidade, tango no tradicional bairro de La Boca, festivais de rock em Villa Soldati e folclore e música urbana na Costanera Sur, justinho trás do Puerto Madero. Estas e muitas outras atividades se desenvolvem no marco do programa “A cidade ao ar livre”.

“Este ano Buenos Aires será a Capital Mundial do Livro e estará na grande vidraça da cultura internacional. Por isso nos queremos começar o ano com esta multiplicidade de propostas para vizinhos e turistas”, disse o Ministro de Cultura portenho, Hernán Lombardi.

Entre os destacados, está a apresentação de músicos como Pedro Aznar, Bahiano, Javier Malosetti, o Duo Coplanacu, Opus 4 e Jaime Torres, na Costanera Sur. Os shows, aulas gratuitas e exibições na famosa Rua Caminito de La Boca. E um espetáculo de tango aéreo no anfiteatro do Parque Centenário, os dias 12, 13, 19 e 20 de janeiro as 8.30PM. THE FIRST BEATLES MUSEUM IN LATIN AMERICA (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

Last week, Buenos Aires became the first city in Latin America to have its own Beatles Museum. The place is a permanent tribute from a great fan and collector that everyone can enjoy now. It’s located just a few blocks away from our Hostel Colonial, on the theater complex Paseo La Plaza (1660 Corrientes Avenue) and owns an interesting selection of Beatle memorabilia.

Since January 3rd, next to The Cavern pub –which replicates in Buenos Aires the aesthetics and spirit of the pub where The Beatles born in Liverpool-, the collection of Rodolfo Vázquez surprises its visitors. There, you can find everything about one of the greatest bands of all times: original records, customs, autographs, pictures, figurines and all you can and can’t imagine to remember The Beatles.

“It’s the only Beatles museum whose catalog belongs to a private collector. It’s actually the only Beatles Museum in the world apart from The Beatles Story in Liverpool”, says Vázquez, owner of around 8.500 objects which will alternate in the exhibition during 2011. You can find rarities as checks signed by the famous musicians or a condom box with the image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The ticket costs 10 Argentine pesos (2.5 American dollars): a bargain to enjoy this new space which tributes the Fab Four. A ticket to the Beatlemania that spread round the world in the 60’s and 70’s and the magic of the music which accompanied millions of people in their everyday life and still does.

FOTOGRAFÍAS HISTÓRICAS NA EMBAIXADA DO BRASIL (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Pela primeira vez em Buenos Aires, se poderão desfrutar na Embaixada do Brasil (Cerrito 1350) fotografias inéditas da construção da capital, Brasília. A exibição “Brasília 1957: uma saga do século XX” se apresenta no foyer do auditório até 28 de fevereiro como uma lembrança da era de sonhos, esperança e modernidade que invadiu o Brasil durante a construção da sua nova capital.

As fotografias pertencem ao sueco Åke Borglund quem foi posto pelo capricho do destino no lugar exato para ser cronista único da construção de Brasília. Premiado na Europa pelo seu trabalho, ele ganhou uma viagem pelo Brasil que o levaria tirar quase 800 imagens em branco e preto. Dessas joias apenas sobreviveram umas 40 que são o corpo desta amostra histórica e muito especial.

De segunda a sexta, de 12PM a 7PM, pode se visitar para apreciar, em palavras do curador Evandro Salles: “... o inicio da construção que passaria ser a grande realização modernista brasileira: Brasília, a capital sonhada por várias gerações que finalmente se erguia no centro distante do Brasil”. Uma cidade que capitalizava um sonho de progresso e crescimento.

Brasilia materializava a transição do Brasil agrário para o industrial, aonde os logros da modernidade finalmente poderiam ser divididos entre aqueles que, durante séculos, estiveram privados das riquezas que produziam. Este era o objetivo, a ideia que movia a multidão de pessoas: a cidade sonho, a capital da esperança. Cenário único da utopia e efervescência retratadas pelo Åke Borglund e que podem se desfrutar em Buenos Aires.

O ÔNIBUS TURÍSTICO SE ESTENDE (Por Hostel Buenos Aires)

Nestes primeiros dias do ano, o ônibus turístico da cidade está em plena expansão. Acompanhando o crescimento turístico da cidade, o percurso deste transporte portenho também cresce. Agora chega até o tradicional bairro de Belgrano (antes só chegava até Palermo) e permite recorrer alguns dos pontos mais significativos de Buenos Aires com uma tarifa mais econômica que a dos taxis.

Esse ônibus amarelo, sem teto, que já nos temos acostumado ver pelas esquinas mais famosas da cidade, agora também se voltará familiar para os vizinhos de Belgrano. A chegada a este típico bairro portenho se inclui em um programa de ações que procura por ao distrito entre os símbolos turístico-históricos da cidade. Esquinas clássicas como as de Cabildo e Juramento ou Maure e Luis María Campos se somam à volta.

Belgrano é um desses bairros que se compõe de outros tantos: o bairro chinês (com a sua tradicional festa de fim do ano no verão), o bairro River (aonde se localiza o estádio do River Plate, onde a seleção argentina de futebol joga seus jogos), Belgrano R (R de Residencial, com algumas das casas mais belas da cidade) e o Bajo Belgrano (nos redores das maravilhosas praças das Barrancas).

NEW TOURIST CIRCUITS (By Hostel Buenos Aires)

Our country set a goal for this 2011: to reach new records in its sustained touristic growth. After receiving more than 5 million visitors last year, the new objective is to augment that number with its new tourist circuits. Hostel Colonial tells you about this new trendy destines in Argentina, so you can know them before you tourist agency or travelling friend finds out about them.

There are five different topics to be promoted, trying to leave behind the classic picture of “tango-football/soccer-meat” which has signed the Argentine promotion recently.

The first one is “Active Argentina”, focused on sport and adventure tourism. Here, you’ll find the local typical products (such as mate or dulce de leche), traditional gastronomy (once again, meat, but also creole food including potatoes and corn) and the wine routes (in Mendoza, the Patagonia and the south of Salta).

Finally, there’s a business option as “Argentina Meetings” which bets on the realization of congresses, events and conventions in the big cities as Buenos Aires, Rosario, Córdoba or Mar del Plata.
