A TRUE PORTEÑO CHURCH

One of the most beautiful and representative church of our city is located in the neighborhood of Caballito: Nuestra Señora de los Buenos Aires (Our Lady from Buenos Aires). The place is dedicated to the Lady of Sailors which inspired the name of our city to the Spanish sailor Pedro de Mendoza during the first foundation of Buenos Aires. Located in 1730 Gaona, it’s built in neo gothic Lombard style.

The church is a work by the Italian architect and Presbyter Ernesto Vespignani and the constructor Francisco J. Pini. It was built between 1911 and 1932 and has two outstanding towers, 70 meters tall. The church was restored in the mid 90’s and recovered the bronze statues of its front doors which tribute Spanish figures Juan Díaz de Solís, Pedro de Mendoza, Cristóbal Colon and Juan de Garay.

In the main altar, you’ll see images of Our Lady of Mercy and Our Lady of Buenos Aires, both on a ship. The temple is an 80 meters long and its structure has a particular luminosity. You can see the building from far away, in a neighborhood full of small houses.

The cult of the Lady of Buenos Aires has its origins in the year 1370 when a symbolic figure arrived to the shores of Cerdeña, Italy. You can find similar images in our main Cathedral, in front of the Plaza de Mayo, made of polychrome wood.

Até 27 de novembro próximo, você poderá dar “uma volta pelo futuro” da mão de uma das maiores exibições da região. Tecnologia de vanguarda, espetáculos ao vivo, conferências e brincos para todas as idades.

Localizada em Villa Martelli, a amostra organizada pelo governo argentino superou todas as expectativas de convocatória e agora vai por mais. Organizada em 5 continentes (ar, terra, água, fogo e imaginação) propõe uma viagem pelos últimos desenvolvimentos do pais e também pela historia da ciência e tecnologia argentinas.

Entre as principais atrações se encontram: os gelos argentinos (para olhar a queda de um glaciário desde Buenos Aires), a máquina de Deus (que simula em escala ao maior acelerador de partículas do mundo), a chance de jogar futebol com robôs, simuladores de vôo, tocar instrumentos musicais virtuais, visitar um observatório muito especial e observar o funcionamento de uma grande represa hidroelétrica, entre outros.

Tecnópolis está aberta de 12AM a 9PM, com exceção dos dias de chuva. Dentro do prédio há postos de comida e banheiros accessíveis, convertendo a exibição em uma grande opção para passar o dia inteiro. WOMEN TANGO FESTIVAL

In 10 days the “Mujercitas Tango Festival” (Women Tango Festival) will start. The event is dedicated to the tango women. From September the 8th to the 11th, 4 days full of classes, events, demonstrations and exhibitions in charge of 7 women who love the River Plate rhythm. Silvia Toscano, Carolina Bonaventura, Mariana Dragone, Virginia Pandolfi, Paula Rubin, Karina Colmeiro and Cristina Sosa, live and teach tango with passion.

The classes of Female Technic are the most required ones and, by nightm the Festival teachers’ exhibition is a must.

ARTE NA EMBAIXADA DO BRASIL

A Embaixada do Brasil em Buenos Aires, apresenta no seu Espaço Cultural (Arroyo 1142), a amostra “Permutações”. Três artistas com a necessidade de se expressar, expressar seu olhar do mundo e, ao mesmo tempo, expressar o olhar desse mundo olhado. Três amigos unidos pelo Brasil e a Argentina que apresentam uma exibição original e atractiva para os amantes da plástica.

Três caminhos de trabalho na arte que são convergentes, divergentes, superpostos, encimados, cruzados, laterais, efêmeros, permanentes, simples, paralelos, opostos, coincidentes, complicados. Os artistas Hugo de Marziani, Luiz Dolino e Jorge Pereira expõem até o próximo 17 de setembro em um espaço que abarca à perfeição a proposta multicultural e diversa.

A amostra se pode visitar de segundas a sextas de 11AM a 6PM e os sábados de 11AM a 4PM. A entrada é livre.

PHOTO EXHIBITION ON THE CROSS OF THE ANDES

The historic cavalcade of the Andes Mountains by General San Martín to join his army to the independence struggles of Chile and Peru is depicted in an emotional photo exhibition in the main hall of the Argentine Public Television (Figueroa Alcorta 2977). “The Cross of the Andes” promises to present images which can only be found by taking the same road as our Liberator did.

The exhibition is a tribute to José de San Martín and his revolutionary legacy which was born as an idea of the Public TV and the Province of San Juan. Since 2005, the government of that province emulates every year that epic cross of the Liberator, through the Valle de Los Patos Sur. Beauty and history in a path which was accompanied by more than 50 photographer journalist in its last edition.

The path started on February the 12th in the heart of the Andes, in the limit of Valle Hermoso where the Battle of Chacabuco is commemorated. The road continued through the Destacamento Alvarez Condarco, the Refugio de Las Frías, the Espinacito peak (4.850mts), the Vegas de Gallardo, the Valle de Patos Sur, the Refugio de Sardina, the Valle Hermoso and the Quebrada de la Honda, among others.

The cross was an adventure which involved the riding, the cold, the changing climate, the rain, the sun and the snow. Each photograph is a personal story, a history of their livings, a point of view. The 52 photographs can be seen for free, everyday, from 8AM to 8PM, until September the 18th.

O CICLO JAZZOLOGIA 2011

Todas as terças-feiras, até fim do ano, se desenvolvem o ciclo Jazzologia 2011 no Centro Cultural General San Martín (Rua Sarmiento 1551). Este ciclo dedicado a trazer grandes expoentes da cena do jazz contemporâneo se apresenta de abril a dezembro. Com mais de 20 anos de historia, o ciclo tem regalado veladas inesquecíveis para os amantes do estilo. Hostel Colonial te conta quem se apresenta este mês.

As entradas são livres e se devem retirar na bilheteria do entrepiso do centro cultural, o mesmo dia do evento a partir das 6.30PM. Os shows são as terças as 8.30PM na sala Enrique Muiño, do 4to chão. A capacidade da mesa é de 270 pessoas. Coordenado pelo experto local Carlos Inzillo, o ciclo é um verdadeiro clássico da cena do jazz portenho.

Seus quatro integrantes: Sergio Wagner, Misael Parola, Federico Llach e Pedro Ahets Etcheberry, são músicos muito jovens com uma formação musical rigorosa.

NEW MODERN ART CENTER

A new space for modern art is open in Puerto Madero. Right next to the most famous boutique hotel of the area, the Faena Art Center was opened. It is located in a beautiful building which housed on of the first great mills of the country. After a large recycling process, this original space developed a double attractive: the architectonic and the artistic ones. Hostel Colonial tells you what is there to see.

To renew the place, the port, industrial and service architecture was recovered, preserving the original shapes -as the south mill, the north mill and the machine room-, plus creating new external spaces to provide an open dialogue with the pedestrians. Now, besides the art itself, you can appreciate representative elements of the industrial building of the beginnings of the 20’s.
The Art Center is located on 400 Azucena Villaflor Boulevard, in the corner with Juana Manso Avenue, in Puerto Madero. Large staircase and monumental windows frame the two floors of 630 square meters, the exhibition rooms which allow the curators to work with the layout liberty contemporary art requires.

The opening exhibition belongs to the Brazilian Ernesto Neto, one of the main figures of Brazil artistic scene. He takes the heritage of the neo-Concrete artistic movement which place the spectator in the center of the creative action. From August to November 2011 you’ll have the chance to enjoy this exhibition and to know the new art space.

ARTE PAULISTA EM BUENOS AIRES

Uma proposta para conhecer a arte alternativa de São Paulo tem chegado para Buenos Aires. Variadas linguagens da arte compiladas na amostra “Do outro lado da Ponte: Arte da Periferia da Cidade de São Paulo”. Começando neste mês de agosto, a Fundação Centro de Estudos Brasileiros (FUNCEB), convida para conhecer uma amostra idealizada, coordenada, montada e curada por Lucia Tennina.

Até 30 de agosto, com entrada livre, se poderão ver, entre outras obras, os projetos fotográficos “Morada” e “Saraus” de Guma (fotógrafo da zona sul da cidade); também um pouco da produção literária da periferia de São Paulo, com a instalação poética: “Coletiva Correspondência Poética”; e desfrutar da projeção de diversos vídeos de cineastas da região.

“Atravessar as pontes que passam pelos rios Tietê e Pinheiros da Cidade de São Paulo simboliza no imaginário paulista a passagem do centro à periferia, da city aos subúrbios…

“A diferencia destes espaços sole se abordar nos médios de comunicação a partir de relatos de terror com estadísticas do crime e da pobreza”, diz Lucia Tennina, quem concebeu este fantástico projeto.

A FUNCEB oferece seus espaços culturais (galeria, auditório, biblioteca) para mostrar ao público de Buenos Aires o que é produzido de jeito independente. A amostra pode se visitar de segundas a sextas de 9AM a 9PM e os sábados de 9AM a 12PM. O lugar principal de exibição é a Galeria Portinari, sobre a Rua Esmeralda 969.

TEMPORARY GOODBYE TO A NOTABLE BAR

One of the oldest notable bars of Buenos Aires City, the Richmond Café (on 468 Florida pedestrian street) has closed temporarily. While an initiative to preserve it as Historical Patrimony of the City is being discussed to avoid its closure, the owners announced its closure. Because of that, many Porteños bet on the chance for the reopening of this great notable bar.

The place was visited by the greatest Argentine writers of the 20s of the past century, as Jorge Luis Borges, Leopoldo Marechal, Oliverio Girondo, and many others of the group called Florida. That was the golden age of the café, when the local bohemia was on the air and the discussion were about avant-garde, cultural renovation and poetic declamations which completed the evenings.

Built in 1917 by French architect Jules Dormal (the same architect who built the last details of the Colón Theater), the Richmond stood still in time until these days. A couple of months ago, economic issue forced the owners to close the billiard saloon on the subsoil and now threaten the café itself. Sometimes lost in the crowd of Florida Street, the Richmond remains a symbol of our history.

A café which represents more than a simple shop: a true Porteño icon, a place full of history and memories that’s worth to preserve.

O MUSEU FORTABAT

Esse micro mundo que é Puerto Madero tem de tudo, inclusive seu próprio museu. A Coleção de Arte Amália Lacroze de Fortabat, ou Museu Fortabat, é um espaço moderno para uma nutrida coleção. No começo do porto, sobre o dique 4, quase 7000 metros quadrados com enormes salas de exibição esperam aos visitantes. Hostel Colonial te conta que é o que você poderá encontrar neste Museu.

A localização exata do Museu Fortabat é Olga Cossettini 50. Entre os dois andares e o subsolo, a gente pode desfrutar uma arquitetura de vanguarda. O edifício foi desenhado pelo arquiteto uruguaio Rafael Viñoly radicado em Nova Iorque e autor do Fórum de Tókio e a Biblioteca de Chicago, entre outros.

Está construído com tecnologia de última geração e conta com duas enormes salas de exibição, hemeroteca, auditório, escritórios, café e uma cúpula de vidro coberta por um complexo sistema de guarda-soles móveis de alumínio que se abrem segundo troca a posição do sol. O Museu pode se visitar de terças a domingos de 12PM a 9PM, a menos de 10 quadras do nosso Hostel Colonial.

A coleção permanente conta com 230 obras com firmas da envergadura de Salvador Dali, Fernando Fader, Antonio Berni, Xul Solar, Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Juan Carlos Castagnino, Pérez Celis, Raúl Soldi e Andy Warhol (quem retratou á senhora Fortabat, dona da coleção e do museu). Também formam parte da coleção pinturas, esculturas e objetos egípcios e gregos milenários.

THE MYSTERIOUS HOUSE IN FRONT OF THE OBELISCO

It is not easy to see it behind the posters and signs, but there it is: in an amazing strange place. The tourists, curiously, are the ones who first see it. They live with their eyes in the skies, looking up and discovering the city that many Porteños think they know. It’s a house, a mysterious house on the top of a building in front of the Obelisco, which reminds us that you never really get to know your city.

It’s a wooden house, a chalet, on the top of a 10 story building. The first thing you think when you see it is: Who built this crazy thing and why he did it? The answer has a name and a surname: Rafael Díaz. He was a humble working class man who built furniture in the Obelisco area in the end of the XIX Century. His employer used to tell him: “You’re going to Heaven, Rafael, you have a small chalet booked in Heaven”.


That particular phrase, that dream, inspired Díaz. As time went by, he could build his own successful furniture empire. Eventually, he had the money to make his dream come true: he built a 10 story building (on 1113 Sarmiento Street) and crowned it with the chalet of his dreams (which he copied from one he loved in the near city of Mar del Plata). The year was 1927 and the Obelisco still did not exist.

Ten years later, the Obelisco paired the height of the chalet, the 9 de Julio Avenue was opened and the large posters and signs came to hide –partially- the house of his dreams. The owner died in the end of the sixties and the building was rent for offices. Nobody lived today in the house which once belonged to Rafael Díaz, but it remains in the same spot, surprising the visitors as a symbol of our mysterious Buenos Aires.

THEMATIC VISITS IN THE FINE ARTS MUSEUM

Until December the 17th, the National Fine Arts Museum (MNBA, 1473 Del Libertador Avenue, Recoleta) organizes special guided visits to some of its most outstanding works. In the frame of the new muse graphic design of the lower exhibition rooms, the Museum adds up a new way of approaching to its patrimony. Once a week, the possibility to broaden the interpretations on themes, artists and works is offered.

The goal is to enrich the knowledge on the stable collection and the aesthetic experience of the visitor as an interpreter. The Museum decided to improve the experience with these thematic visits to some of its greatest works. Here are the next visits:

These visits represent special occasions for the visitors, but the Museum itself can be visited any time during its regular schedule from Tuesdays to Fridays from 12.30PM to 8.30PM and Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30AM to 8.30PM.

GENIAIS GRAVADOS NO MAMBA

O artista plástico Antonio Seguí está presente na atual amostra do Museu de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (MAMBA, Avenida San Juan 350, San Telmo). A sua série de “Gravados 1996-2010” se exporá até domingo 28 deste mês, regalando o melhor de uma faceta pouco conhecida da amplíssima obra do artista de Córdoba. Hostel Colonial te conta que é o que você encontrará na exibição.

São -em total- 112 gravados que são parte das 330 obras que no ano 2001 o artista doou ao museu, e hoje estão no acervo permanente. Um conjunto de obras que põem de manifesto o processo criativo de Seguí e que entregam um resumo do seu universo, trajetória e experiência de vida. Das mesmas, se desprende um vitalismo, às vezes expressado com uma brutalidade grotesca e outras com uma concisa simplicidade.

“Dos gravados –habitados por muitos personagens e elementos como edifícios, aviões e animais- se desprende uma grande vitalidade, delineada desde o grotesco, o brutal e a simplicidade, sempre em chave de humor”, apontam os organizadores. Um jeito de ensaiar novas formas e sentidos que logo expressa através dos objetos, esculturas, desenhos e pinturas que compõe.

Antonio Seguí sole dizer que cada uma das suas obras é um conto, no que geralmente ele inclui memorias da sua infância e impressões da vida cidadã, personagens tradicionais - do tango ou do folclore argentino-, sempre em chave humorística. TANGO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IS COMING

Since this Friday the 12th until August 30th, the 9th Edition of the Dance Festival and World Championship “Tango Buenos Aires” will be taking place. The great River Plate rhythm gathers dancers from all around the world who come to show their abilities on the Porteño dance floors. The cradle of tango receives professionals, fans and tango lovers who would never miss this party.

The event will award the best dancers in the categories “Tango Salón”, which privileges the social dance as a Porteño cultural practice; and “Tango Scenario”, which goal is to enrich the dance from a choreographic conception linked to the pure spectacle. During the World Championship the audience will also enjoy tango dancing on the streets, exhibitions, free classes and dance shows.

Tango Buenos Aires sums up a passion which grows year after year not only in Argentina but also in different places of the world. The event is a strong compromise with our historic patrimony, the growth and projection of tango in its many expressions. The importance of tango in the world has grown to the point where our rhythm was declared Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in 2009.

There will also be a large tango dance in the open air, a great moment to take pictures of the dancers or to try to perform a tango step. NOVA PISTA DE PATINAÇÃO SOBRE GELO

A semana passada se inaugurou a primeira pista livre de patinação sobre gelo da cidade. Inspirada no Central Park, a mesma é uma original opção para desfrutar a cidade de um jeito diferente. Funciona até o 25 de agosto, de 9AM a 12AM e de 2PM a 9PM, todos os dias na Praça Uruguai (Avenida Figueroa Alcorta e Tagle). Um inverno original que cresce em opções para os turistas.

A pista tem uma superfície de 450 metros quadrados e permite que umas 100 pessoas patinem ao mesmo tempo. Pela afluência de público esperada, se prevê dar turnos de meia hora por pessoa respeitando a ordem de chegada. Haverá também prioridade para os menores de 12 anos. A pista, que voltará cada inverno, é uma alternativa às poucas pistas que ficam na cidade e que são pagas.

Uma grande opção para se divertir em família em um passeio pelos parques de Recoleta e Palermo e perto das atrações do bairro (museus, Plaza Francia, entre outros). Para patinar convim ter em conta levar uma boa equipe porque o frio na pista se sente: leve luva, calças grossas e mangas largas pelas quedas. Você pode levar seus próprios patines ou retirar os que se oferecem na pista (com documento de identidade).

Na pista há regras relacionadas com este esporte e com a seguridade. Por exemplo, você não pode trocar o sentido de giro ou cruzar a pista, também não podem patinar duas pessoas das mãos ou empurrar outro patinador. O ideal é não levar bolsas ou mochilas, porque as mesmas não estão permitidas na pista. Uma dica importante: estão proibidos os telefones e câmaras enquanto patina.

TRIBUTE TO EVITA

Last week (on July 26th) a new anniversary of Eva Duarte de Perón (Evita) was commemorated. In her memory, a mural has been inaugurated in a symbolic building of Buenos Aires City. Located on 9 de Julio Avenue (in the corner with Moreno Street) the former Public Works building, actual Ministry of Health and Social Development is a large part of Evita’s public history.

From this building where the first Argentine TV broadcast was made, Evita pronounced some of its most recalled speeches. Today, on one of the facades of the 93 meters-tall building you can see a picture of the most famous Argentine woman. The work belongs to Alejandro Marmo, a 40 year-old sculptor who works on a project called “Art in the factories” which seeks to transform junk in art.


The visual artist Daniel Santoro, an expert of the Peronist iconography, joined Marmo in the design of the images. The work is made in iron and depicts the image of Evita in the cover of her book “La Razón de mi vida” (The reason of my life). The mural is 31 meters tall and 24 meters wide, weighing 15 tons. By night, the image will be lighted by multicolored led lights.

Besides this image, another profile of Evita is being mounted on the north façade, oriented to the Obelisco, which will be inaugurated on August 22nd (the day Evita quit the vice-presidency). Just 10 blocks away from our Hostel Colonial, two great works destined to become the new Porteño postcards.

ESCULTURAS ORIGINAIS

No novo Passeio das Esculturas, localizado no bairro da Recoleta, na Praça San Martín de Tours, um artista plástico tem empreendido uma experiência artística inovadora e original: transforma árvores secas em esculturas do médio ambiente. As intervenções estão a cargo do artista Diego Musadi, que cria formas com eles e os pinta de cores vivas. Com o conceito “Criar algo belo da morte”, deslumbra aos visitantes.

Árvores secas que de outro jeito vão ser retirados e transformados em recheio orgânico têm sido reciclados no lugar como originais esculturas. Na Praça San Martín de Tours, nas ruas Alvear e Schiaffino já se podem visitar cinco árvores convertidos em obras de arte. Um tronco pintado junto a uma porta vermelha parece parte de um filme de ciência ficção, outro de branco como um fantasma.

Segundo o artista, Diego Musadi, com a intervenção das árvores procura: “imortalizar e revalorizar a fonte criadora”, e ter a oportunidade de fazê-lo no espaço público tem sido “quase um sonho”. O trabalho o realiza em conjunto com a muralista Alicia Quintana e tem um beneficio extra: tira o risco de que as ramas cair e é mais econômico que tirar a árvore inteira.

Embora não é uma opção com cada árvore, o artista Musadi diz que gostaria de fazer “milhares” e espera que na segunda etapa do projeto possa estendê-lo para mais bairros. Há alguns exemplos em outros bairros como uma árvore na Avenida Juan B. Justo 6518, Floresta, que parece aberto por um fechamento de ouro e em Belgrano (Juramento e Luis Maria Campos) surpreende ver o coração de uma árvore pintada de vermelho e tecido com fio azul.
